Dr. Dave Rogers - Semantic Layer · Enterprise BI · Data Architecture
25+ years building the analytics infrastructure that lets companies make faster, better decisions. I specialize in semantic layer design, enterprise data warehouse architecture, and building BI teams that scale, with a track record spanning retail, restaurant, financial services, and insurance. I bring MIT and doctoral credentials, hands-on technical depth, and the executive communication skills to move organizations from gut-feel to governed, trusted insight.
Full-time, fractional, or project-based engagements
I build and lead the analytics capabilities that let companies trust their numbers. That means semantic layers where metric definitions live once and propagate everywhere, data warehouses that stay reliable through rapid growth, and BI teams structured to deliver, not just report. My deepest experience is with fast-growing, multi-unit operators (retail, restaurant, multi-location services) where the data environment has to scale as fast as the business does. I pair technical architecture skills with executive communication and business acumen developed across two graduate degrees and a doctoral program, which means I can move between the warehouse schema and the board room without losing either audience.
Employment History
Built and scaled the enterprise BI and QA function through 3× restaurant growth (300 → 800+ locations). Designed the multi-grain Operations Recap semantic layer: one published Tableau Data Source serving four audiences from a single set of metric definitions. Migrated EDW from on-prem SQL Server to Snowflake on AWS, reduced external spend by $200K annually, and cut daily reporting delivery time by two hours. Led a team of internal and offshore developers and QA analysts.
Led an 18–25 person team of developers, analysts, and project managers supporting Analytics and Data Management for Loss Mitigation and real estate operations across the residential mortgage portfolio. Overhauled reporting delivery via a SharePoint-based portal and centralized Credit Data repository, eliminating ad hoc data reconciliation across teams.
Rebuilt the agency's marketing analytics data warehouse, improving weekly reporting on-time delivery by 10× and cutting weekly processing time by two-thirds through ETL and architecture overhaul. Delivered campaign attribution and per-customer ROI measurement for Omnicom clients on time and on budget.
Supported all insurance business functions including Underwriting, Claims, Legal Compliance, Accounting, and Predictive Analytics. Led all applications, data warehousing, reporting, and analytics development activities, optimizing databases and platforms.
Headed a team of business analysts assessing information needs, defining reporting requirements, and guiding IT implementations of reporting systems using Teradata and IBM DB2/EEE.
Built the enterprise Data Warehouse from the ground up for a national supermarket distributor. Saved $500K in inventory costs by proactively identifying overstock exposure through supply-chain analytics, comparing on-hand and on-order data against historical sales trends. Led the DW team through a period of significant company consolidation.
Led BI development teams over a 9-year tenure, building a massive retail data warehouse on Teradata that delivered daily POS item sales analytics to Merchandising, Operations, Loss Prevention, and the Executive Team. Pioneered internet-based remote delivery of interactive sales performance data to field merchants and district managers, before vendors offered it as a product.
Consulted internally on the retail industry's unique IT requirements. Conceptualized product concepts applying advanced technologies to retail business challenges. Promoted changes in divisional strategic direction based on market insights. Managed development team in technical product investigations.
